What is CGPA in Mumbai University?
The University of Mumbai shifted from traditional percentage marking to a Credit and Grading System (CGS) under CBCS (Choice Based Credit System). Your result is now expressed as a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) — a weighted average of grade points earned across all subjects.
CGPA runs on a 10-point scale at Mumbai University. Most undergrad students (B.Com, BMS, BAF, B.Sc, BA, BBI etc.) will have a CGPA between 5.00 and 9.50. A CGPA of 10 is the maximum.
Employers, government job forms, MBA admissions (CAT/CET), bank exams, and most further education applications still ask for your percentage — not CGPA. This is the official formula and table to get that number accurately.
The Official Conversion Formula
Mumbai University uses two different formulas — one for CGPA below 7.00 and one for 7.00 and above. Many students miss this and get the wrong percentage.
CGPA 6.99 = 61.62% but CGPA 7.00 = 63.80%. That’s a jump of 2.18% — this is NOT an error. It’s because the two formulas have different slopes. This is confirmed in Mumbai University’s official conversion document.
